5 Local Sandwich Shops To Try For Lunch
"The bread-enclosed convenience food known as the "sandwich" is attributed to John Montagu, fourth Earl of Sandwich (1718-1792), a British statesman and notorious miscreant and gambler, who is said to be the inventor of this type of food so that he would not have to leave his gaming table to take supper.
“Marge, I’d like to be alone with the sandwich for a moment.” - Homer Simpson
There is absolutely no denying that a good sandwich has the power to change our perspective on any given day. Lucky for us, there are plenty of great places near the Villages of Citrus Hills that serve the kind of sandwiches that can brighten up your entire day.
The next time you are thinking about heading out to grab a quick bite to eat around lunchtime, check out one of these local sandwich shops and you will not be disappointed!
Taste of Philly Sub Shop - Crystal River
There are two types of cheesesteaks in the world: the type you can get pretty much anywhere, and the type you can only get in the heart of Philadelphia. The Taste of Philly Sub Shop in Crystal River serves the latter, and they are absolutely fantastic!
This simple little yellow block building on North 2nd Ave puts out some of the absolute best cheesesteaks you will find anywhere. If it’s your first time visiting, we recommend starting off with the Philly Extreme Cheesesteak. But once you have that under your belt, you’ll also want to try the GOLIATH Cheesesteak and the Chicken Carbonara sandwiches.
While the cheesesteaks here are first and foremost, Taste of Philly also serves a dynamite BLT with tons of bacon piled high on Texas Toast.
Brooklyn Dockside Deli - Crystal River
In the lore of great American sandwiches, the New York Deli has to be right up there with the Philly Cheesesteak joint. When you’re living in Citrus County, Brooklyn Dockside Deli is the place to satisfy your cravings for corned beef and pastrami on rye.
This popular sandwich shop is located right on the water and is known for serving large portions of high quality Boar’s Head meats and cheeses.
They also do a fabulous job with their presentation, so what’s not to like, right?
Green Valley Amish Market & Deli - Inverness
Another great option for a good deli sandwich is the Green Valley Amish Market & Deli located in Inverness. If you are looking for one of the best spots in all of Citrus County to grab a hot Reuben sandwich, this is the place.
In addition to serving a quality Reuben, you’ll also want to try some of their deli subs. Most people start out with the Amish Outsider, which is a unique twist on the classic Italian sub. It comes with salami, pepperoni, ham, capicola, and provolone cheese and is topped off with lettuce, tomato, onion, and a vinegar and oil dressing.
Little Italy of Inverness – Inverness
Located right on North Apopka Ave in Inverness, Little Italy of Inverness is the perfect combination of restaurant, bakery, sandwich shop, and deli. And that makes it the best place to stop if you are looking to grab everything you need to make a killer sandwich at home!
In addition to having lots of delicious deli meats to go, you can also order some really unique deli sandwiches to eat here as well. We recommend trying out the house-made roast beef or the “Fahgettaboutit”, which is their take on the classic Italian sub.
Jimmy T’s New York Deli - Hernando
Still craving more options for classic New York style cold cuts? Well, Jimmy T’s New York Deli in Hernando is yet another excellent spot that serves those high quality Boar’s Head meats piled high on fresh bread. They are known for their quick service, so this is a great choice if you are pressed for time. And if cold cuts aren’t your favorite, we hear that they also have a really good gyro!
From Philly cheesesteaks to corned beef and pastrami to Boar’s Head cold cuts, there are tons of options to choose from when it comes to sandwiches in Citrus County. Of course if you don’t feel like leaving the neighborhood you can find a number of incredible sandwiches at the Grille, Skyview, and the Tiki Bar.
